Which barcode symbology should I use?

Code 128 — the workhorse for logistics, asset tags and internal SKUs; encodes letters, digits and symbols compactly.
EAN-13 / EAN-8 / UPC-A — retail product barcodes (point of sale). Digits only, fixed length.
Code 39 — older alphanumeric standard, common in automotive and defence.
ITF-14 — shipping cartons and outer cases (GTIN-14).
QR Code — 2D code for URLs, asset records, Wi-Fi, UPI and anything needing more data or phone scanning.
